Horizon students combine the fields of World History, English, and Physical Science in an interdisciplinary approach to their studies. Prior to the start of the school year, they met at the Nantahala Outdoor Center to get to know one another. In the fall, the freshmen visit the Charlotte Motor Speedway to conduct experiments in motion and forces. They construct trebuchets and catapults (Medieval siege equipment) to further test these concepts and to supplement their studies in Medieval history and literature.
During the freshman year, Horizon students begin to acquire the skills they will rely upon for their entire high school and college career: critical analysis, clear writing, rhetoric, and research.
