Many medium and small sized electric motor manufacturers in US and Europe keep replying on Horizon because of our strength in rich experience and delivery of stable quality rare earth magnets. 50% of our Neodymium magnets are used in a variety of electric motors.
The electric motor using permanent magnets could enhance its power and efficiency, although not all electric motors use a permanent magnet. The two most common motors using permanent magnets are the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and brushless direct current motor (BLDC motor). The two types of electric motors rely upon a combination of an electromagnet of a stator and a permanent magnet mounted on a rotor, usually a rare earth magnet like Neodymium (NdFeB) magnet or Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) magnet to convert electric energy into mechanical energy, i.e. result in smooth rotation and torque production. Key components of electric motors include the stator, which generates a rotating magnetic field, and the rotor, which experiences torque due to the interaction with this field.
The world needs efficient electric motors. The global economy is going towards green electrification to combat global warming. Industrial automation and intelligent living are becoming increasingly widespread. Aerospace and oil & gas industries have a special harsh operating environment. Almost in each industry sector, high-performance electric motors with NdFeB magnet or SmCo magnet are required to play a key role in saving energy, delivering fast and responsive performance and generating comfortable visual perception due to the exceptional magnetic properties of rare earth magnets compared to conventional magnet materials like ceramic or ferrite magnet.
Since the foundation, Horizon concentrate on developing and manufacturing high grades of rare earth magnets for the electric motor application. Currently over 50% of our NdFeB magnets are used in types of electric motors and our long-term cooperating electric motor factories main locate in the advanced industrial countries like US, UK, Italy, Hungary, Germany, France, etc. Our many years experience and know-how enables us to face today’s challenges together with electric motor manufacturers and find the correct solutions for their concerns related permanent magnets, like:
High power, temperature sensitivity and demagnetization risk: Rare earth magnets have outstanding magnetic properties especially the high residual induction Br and intrinsic coercivity Hcj, but they will reduce or even lose at high temperatures. In the wide range of magnet grades the magnet Br will reduce as Hcj or temperature resistance rises and then cost rises too. We are good at working with customers to find the correct magnet material or grade from the concept stage to reach required performance with lower cost.
Long-term operating reliability and durability: and durability: Long-term reliability and durability are critical factors, especially in industrial and oil & gas applications. We understand several ways to ensure stable working in a longer lifespan, like improving the structure of the magnet material, surface treatment to protect magnet material from oxidization, magnetic properties to improve temperature and adverse magnetic field resistance, etc.
Manufacturing and integration complexity: It’s a little complex to design a qualified Neodymium magnet or Samarium Cobalt magnet suitable for mass manufacturing and fabricating to configure the whole electric motor system. Our knowledge and experience will help electric motor engineers with useful recommendation to check, try and fix the correct magnet design.
Size and weight limitation: In some industries like aerospace and automotive, the weight and size are critical factors. We may help electric motor plants to find the right balance between magnet energy density, weight, size and cost with correct design including rare earth magnet type, grade, shape and size.
Cost reduction: Our engineers focus on total system performance and comprehensive cost reduction. Besides reducing production cost of rare earth magnets, we keep improving design and engineering with electric motor factories to reduce the total cost. Moreover we collaborate with them to order magnets when the cost of expensive rare earth like PrNd, DyFe alloy and metal Cobalt locates at the relatively low level.
Stable supply chain: Europe and US consider rare earth elements and even rare earth magnets the most critical materials in terms of their economic importance and supply risk. Our high temperature NdFeB magnets use less heavy rare earth Dy or Tb. Moreover, for some long-term strategic electric motor customers, we have some inventory of NdFeB magnets or SmCo magnets to ensure a quick delivery.
