Samarium Cobalt Magnet

Samarium Cobalt magnet is a rare earth permanent magnet material with high corrosion resistance, and excellent magnetic properties including high coercivity and temperature resistance and good temperature stability.

  • Application Fields Determined by Advantages of Sintered Samarium Cobalt Magnets:

Although its magnetic force is lower than Neodymium Iron Boron magnet at room temperature, it has much better temperature resistance than Neodymium magnet materials. At temperatures over 150 ℃, all the properties including residual induction, maximum energy product, coercivity, and temperature stability exceed those of most Neodymium magnet grades. Therefore SmCo magnet is a premium choice of magnet material for the most demanding environments where the magnet is required to operate at high temperatures (>180℃), across a broad temperature range (<350℃), with the stable magnetic field, or in a corrosive environments, such as travelling wave tubes, circulators, isolators, magnetron sputtering cathodes, sensors, electric submersible pump motors, pump couplings, chemical pumps, magnetic assemblies, etc.

  • Sintered Samarium Cobalt Magnet Manufacturing Process:

Similar to Sintered Neodymium magnet production process, a suitable composition of raw materials is melted through an induction furnace. The SmCo melting ingots are crushed to get bigger particles and then pulverized into fine powder, pressed and sintered to get the raw magnet blocks with required magnetic properties and physic properties. After sintering, the raw magnet blocks are machined according to specific shape and size, magnetized, packaged and shipped.

  • Two Series of Sintered Samarium Cobalt Magnets:

Sintered Samarium Cobalt magnet, known as for Samarium magnet and SmCo magnet is mainly composed of rare earth Samarium and metal Cobalt, so it is also called rare earth Cobalt magnet. Samarium Cobalt magnets are available with two series of materials, SmCo5 and Sm2Co17 often referred to as SmCo 1:5 and SmCo 2:17. SmCo5 magnets have lower magnetic properties than Sm2Co17 magnets, but SmCo5 magnets are easier to be magnetized to saturation. 1:5 SmCo magnets have better mechanical and physical property than 2:17 SmCo magnets and are slightly easier to machine. Moreover, SmCo 1:5 and SmCo 2:17 magnets have different materials composition.

  • Reminder to Use Samarium Cobalt Magnet:

    1. Sintered SmCo permanent magnetic material is brittle, so it is not suitable for structural parts. It’s prone to cracking and chipping, so magnetized SmCo magnets must be handled with care in the process of assembling.

    2. Sintered SmCo permanent magnets will produce small corners because of slight collision during the process of production, packing, and transportation, which affects the appearance of SmCo magnets, but does not affect the magnetic properties, stability and resistance to demagnetization of the magnets, so it can be used normally.

    3. If you want to use rare earth Cobalt magnets in an acid-base environment and another bad environment, we can do electroplating treatment on the magnets. We can make Nickel coated SmCo magnets, Zinc coated SmCo magnets, Epoxy coated SmCo magnets, etc.

    4. If the users need un-magnetized SmCo magnets, they must be familiar with magnetizing energy of their own magnetizing equipments, in order to choose the correct magnet grades which can be magnetized fully.
