Speaker Driver

Audio equipments are indispensable in modern life and play multiple roles in types of designs in various fields like entertainment and music appreciation, news dissemination, education, and daily life. The speaker driver using Neodymium magnet or Ferrite magnet is the core component of the audio equipment, because it takes charge of converting electrical signals into sound and then directly affects the sound quality and performance of the sound equipment. Different types of loudspeaker drivers have different characteristics and applicable scenarios, and choosing the appropriate unit is crucial for achieving ideal sound quality.

Types of Speaker Drivers

According to its working principle, the speaker driver can be divided into types of electric Dynamic, Electromagnetic, Piezoelectric, Electrostatic and Planar-Magnetic. Judging from the current common speaker drivers, over 90% of them are dynamic. In terms of sound quality, electrostatic type may not be inferior to dynamic type, but it is more difficult to design, and it also has problems such as insufficient low frequency, spark discharge, and low power tolerance, so it has not been able to become popular until now. Piezoelectric and planar-magnetic speakers cannot pose any threat to the dynamic driver due to its many advantages: effective cost, wide dynamic range, high power handling, high sensitivity, relatively simple design, and ruggedness.

How Dynamic Speaker Drivers Work

Dynamic driver is the most common type of speaker drivers used in audio systems. It consists of a diaphragm and two magnets: an electromagnet (a voice coil) and a permanent magnet like Ferrite or Neodymium magnet. The voice coil receives electrical input and is thus converted into an electromagnet. The basic working principle of dynamic speaker drivers is that a diaphragm attached to voice coil suspended in a permanent magnetic field moves back and forth to produce sound waves and send them out into the surrounding air.

Why Magnet Material Types Matter to Loudspeaker Drivers

Permanent magnet is one of three most important components of the speaker driver. Currently permanent magnets used in speaker drivers are mainly Neodymium magnet and Ferrite magnet, although some percentages of Alnico magnets are used in some special application drivers. Neodymium magnet and Ferrite magnet have their own specific properties which may meet the different needs and preferences of the speaker drivers. Ferrite magnet driver has a very large market, where low cost budget and a warm sound resonance is required regardless of the weight or the size, because Ferrite magnet strength and cost is low. In theory the speaker driver magnet material should not directly affect the sound quality, if the magnet can supply enough force to move the speaker’s voice coil. However, the type of magnet can indirectly influence the overall design, weight, size, and cost of the speaker, which may result in perceived differences in sound quality.

Neodymium Magnets Revolutionize Speaker Drivers in Design, Sound Quality and Performance

Compared to conventional Ferrite or Alnico magnets used in loudspeakers, the Neodymium magnets are the world’s strongest type of permanent magnet, 5-8 times of Ferrite magnetic energy density. This loudspeaker magnet, Neodymium magnet property combination of small size and extreme magnetic strength enlarges potential of the speaker design and advantages.

  1. Compact and lightweight design: The exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and magnetic properties allows for the creation of smaller and lighter speaker drivers without compromising the audio quality, for example sleeker and more portable headphones and portable Bluetooth speakers, where weight and size are critical concerns.

  2. Improved Efficiency: Neodymium magnet high magnetic flux density significantly improves the efficiency of speaker drivers. This means that they require less power to produce louder sound. As a result, audio devices with Neodymium drivers often have longer life and reduced energy consumption.

  3. Enhanced sound quality:Neodymium magnet high and uniform magnetic field facilitates precise control over movement of the voice coil and the speaker cone, especially for many high-end speakers like tweeters. The better the control over this movement, the clearer and more accurate the sound reproduction. In essence, Neodymium magnets empower speaker systems to deliver high fidelity audio.

Why Speaker Driver Manufacturers Purchase Horizon Magnetics Neodymium Magnets

Customers can not be confident in suppliers’ capacities when the suppliers have no experience in cooperating with their competitors. We understand the application requirements of the speaker drivers, because we have supplied Neodymium magnets in some grades like N38, N50, N35H, N42H, N42SH and shapes like ring, disc and block to dozens of US and European loudspeaker manufacturers like Dolby Laboratories, DC Gold Audio, Lowther Loudspeakers Systems, Lange Loudspeakers, Manger Audio, etc. Moreover, we work with loudspeaker factories closely to learn their specific demanding application environments and then customize Neodymium speaker driver magnets with special properties, like large size, high corrosion resistance, high surface roughness, cost efficiency, and so on.
